The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This choice of words suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games of all time. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
