Space Traveler Shares Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
